There are three primary classifications of water damage based on the level of contamination of the water: Gray, Black, and Clean (White).
Clean water includes rainwater and water pouring from broken water pipes. There is no harm to humans who come in contact with clean water, but this water is not meant for drinking and washing purposes in most cases.
Gray water is slightly contaminated, and includes water from dishwashers, showers, and so on. There is a slight risk of contamination from this water, but generally if you are in contact with gray water you are safe from hazardous materials.
Black water is highly contaminated. It includes harmful chemicals and biological matter, such as that found in sewage and floodwater. Black water can contain disease, viruses, human waste, dead animals, chemicals, pesticides and dangerous industrial runoff including heavy metals. Many aspects of black water can be hazardous or fatal to human health.
