Preventing Water Damage While Away On Winter Vacation

As winter approaches, many of us eagerly anticipate the joy of a vacation away from the cold. However, amidst the excitement, it’s crucial to consider the potential risks our homes face, particularly from water damage. Burst pipes, leaks, and flooding can wreak havoc in our absence. To ensure your winter getaway is stress-free, it’s important to know how to prevent water damage and safeguard your home.

Inspect and Repair Before Departure

One of the first steps in preventing water damage is to conduct a thorough inspection of your home. Look for leaks in pipes, faucets, and appliances. Inspect the roof for any signs of damage or missing shingles. Check the gutters and downspouts to ensure proper drainage. It’s essential to address any issues you find before leaving to mitigate the risk of a larger problem occurring while you’re away.

Turn Off the Water Supply

A foolproof way to prevent water damage is to turn off the main water supply to your home. Locate the shut-off valve and close it tightly. This simple step can save you from potential disasters caused by leaking pipes or faulty appliances. Remember to also turn off the water supply to individual appliances such as the washing machine, dishwasher, and ice maker.

Drain the Plumbing System

Even after turning off the main water supply, residual water can still be present in the plumbing system. To eliminate this risk, open all faucets and flush toilets to drain excess water from the pipes. Consider hiring a professional to blow out your sprinkler system if you have one. By draining the plumbing system, you reduce the likelihood of pipes bursting and causing extensive water damage.

Install a Leak Detection System

Enhance your home’s security by installing a smart leak detection system. These systems utilize sensors to identify leaks and can promptly notify you via a smartphone app. Some advanced variants even boast automatic shut-off capabilities, halting water flow upon leak detection to prevent further damage.

Secure Windows and Doors

Water damage doesn’t always come from above. Heavy rain can lead to leaks around windows and doors. Before leaving, check for any gaps or cracks and seal them with weatherstripping or caulking. This simple step can prevent water from seeping into your home and causing damage.

Enlist the Help of a Trusted Neighbor or Friend

Having a trustworthy neighbor or friend keep an eye on your home can be invaluable. Provide them with a spare key and emergency contact information. Ask them to check your home periodically, especially during extreme weather conditions. In the event of an issue, having someone nearby can facilitate a quicker response.

While these preventative measures significantly reduce the risk of water damage during your winter vacation, unforeseen events can still occur. RJ, Wes, and Andrew did an amazing job to remove the cabinets when we had a water leak in our kitchen. They were extremely courteous, thoughtful, and quick! In addition, Daniel and Michael from the service side tried their best to work with our insurance company, scheduling crews to come out and making sure things were taken care of. All and all, a great crew of people to work with for what was a very stressful situation for our family.
